When someone visits the front page of drupal.org he/she will think that drupal 6 is always the best way to go. This is because the link to drupal 5.7 is grayed out.
This results in a lot of newbies downloading drupal 6 (or in the future drupal 7?) and then later running into the problem that some contributed modules are not ported yet. So these newbies go to the forums to ask how they can downgrade their site.
Of course it is desirable that a lot of people try out and test drupal 6. However, it can lead to a lot of frustration among newcomers.
My suggestion would be to have only one download link that leads to a page with a very short explanation about how to decide which version to download and use (a brief overview of advantages and disadvantages).
Of course on this page there should be links to the drupal versions that would still be interesting (for various reasons) to download and use, test, develop et cetera.
