best way of making 4 column theme?

have played around with several themes... the 4 column themes available are all very cluttered and graphics intensive...

i just want a clean simple 4 column theme...

Grid Inspired theme looks great but is only 3 column...

Channel Nine theme is interesting but the top sections seems strange, the left column is higher than the right 1 and 2 columns...

am currently using a zen theme...

what would be the best way to get a nice functioning clean looking 4 column theme?

if i could keep using the zen classic them but drop in a Right 2 colum to make it 4 columns...

is that workable?

i tried using Panels module but it was a disaster...

any other thoughts?
