Wondering if this will ever be compatible with private files? For those of us with private files are there any other options to optimizing performance?

its possible in theory. Got something similar working for boost in 6.x
#413908: Cache js/css files, allow for a "static" site
It gzips the js/css files as well.

For this, creative .htaccess files is whats required IMHO, as well as write access to every dir that a js file could be in.

Version 5 is no longer supported.

This is a duplicate of #457186: Private download method and javascript aggregator

If the other issue gets fixed we can port it to D5.
