The description works fine for me on all pages EXCEPT the one I select as the home page.

I made a page, and used drupal's optional core 'path' module to call this page "welcome"

then in /admin/settings/site-information I set the 'Default front page' to 'welcome'

Now the welcome page no longer shows the Description metatag.

Please help!

You need to do one of the following:

a. Uncheck "Use front page meta tags" on "/admin/content/nodewords", or
b. Fill in the meta tags for the front page on "/admin/content/nodewords/frontpage".

In your case (using a Page node as frontpage), you'll probably want (a).
