When I go to mysite.com/rss.xml there are no nodes in there. Why might this be? On another site the nodes are showing in the rss file, but I don't think there are any differences in the way I've configured the 2 sites.

Any help is appreciated.

Fixed! Didn't realize a node needed to be promoted to front page in order to appear in the feed.

Yeh, this is what i don't understand about feeds in general, and why I don't use them.
You usually can't tell what information you're actually subscribing to - the whole site,
only the frontpage, all blogs, one blog, one forum, all the forums, etc.

As a designer of a drupal site, even I don't know what feeds all those orange icons link to.

Any advice?

The feed available on the front page (rss.xml) will show you items promoted to the front page. If you are viewing a taxonomy term page then the feed available on that page will show items that are listed on that page. The same theory applies to any page you are looking at that has a feed icon available.
