I'm working on a site with a lot of content with longish titles (50-75 characters). Is there a way to set Path-Auto to use, say, the first 6 words in the title, or a set of words up to some character limit? IOW, I'm trying to avoid having truncated words in the URL.

There is no capability for this now - I suggest you open a feature request for it in the issue queue for Pathauto.
