I want to have a homepage with articles on it, each article will show a title and a sentence or two of content...however when the user clicks on the article they are shown the page that informs them that they can only see the article if logged in. What module can help me accomplish this? I have looked high and low and can't seem to find it.

The last feature is that I am charging for membership. So in order to login they need to pay for a subscription to the site. I have installed ubercart for this...is that the preferred tool (payments are made via paypal)?

I don't know if Ubercart is "the preferred tool" but it certainly will work for what you want. Using workflow-ng and roles you can add a role to a user when they check out a product. You just need to create a role with access to the subscription based content and you are set. You can search the forums on Ubercart.org http://www.ubercart.org/forum for more information and examples of how to set this up.
