It would appear that this module provides a subset of nodeprofile's functionality? Is that a correct assumption?

Yes,
Nodeprofile has some extra features, like allowing you to create different profiles for different roles.
However, nodeprofile is now obsolete. It won't be upgrade to drupal 6.
They are making a new module called content_profile that supersedes, yet it doesn't appear to be backward compatible nor have an upgrade path from bio or nodeprofile.

I know this is closed but I just had to laugh... Bio is older than nodeprofile. ;)
