Hello Michelle,
I'm testing your module and simply looks great. I have, however, some questions. The first one is regarding birthdays.
I would like that users got an automated email on their birthdays. I have birthday module that simply does that, but after implementing Advanced Profile Kit (default configuration, I simply followed this tutorial), the custom "date" field I created to work with birthday simply is ommited, or even worse: that field was needed when registering but it's not shown any more and when editing their profiles, users would have to fill it in again if they want it to be shown on their basic information.
1. Is there any way to make birthday module work with advanced profile kit?
2. Is there any better way to achieve that without using birthday module?

I have added the Birthday field to the All About User Mini Panel.
Add Pane: Profile Category - Personal Information.
I have a normal Core Profile Date Field added to my User Management > Profiles settings. So, I dont know what you mean by "custom date field". However, the module works as expected, before and after I installed Advanced Profile. (except the date field provides years into the future, so users can be born in the future. I think this is a problem with the module though, as the Event module does the same for me)

You can add profile fields to advprofile as Spring.Goth explained. Making the birthday module work with datefield for CCK is in its issue queue, IIRC.

I also got this to work but the images do not show up? any ideas

Dates don't have images. If this is a different issue, you need to start a different issue. And you need to provide more information because I have no clue what images you're talking about.

Sorry for the cryptic message. Regarding the birthday module:
I get it to function with the APK in terms of the numerical birth date appearing. What I meant by images is that the birthday module will also show an image of the related astrological sign with the birth date along with an optional (I turned it off) link to Yahoo Horoscopes. So, the data shows up but the image does not get pulled in for some reason.

In that case, what you want to ask is how to make the birthdays module work with panels. This has nothing to do with advprofile.
