I was wondering is there any way to set up permissions on uploaded files, whether they are visible/downloadable by specific user roles. I am using 'private' download method, so I thought that it would be something 'built-in' but I'm afraid that it is very difficult to find any information on this. So, please share your experiences.

Be sure that assigned user is enabled to download a file from your site. it should be under user/access rule.

Sorry, I was not clear enough, I want SOME files to be downloadable by user role, rest of them would still be public. So this setting is for setting the permissions globally, and I want it tuned by user roles.
