You can always use "site:url" in Google to search drupal.org. For example "search site:http://drupal.org" brings up the following:

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=search+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fdrupa...

I sometimes find using this method to search a site gives better results than the onsite search!

The site search brings focused search result. Google can damp some of the search result. Ofcourse as you said in some instants you may prefer to use Google search particularly when you want to look for a search result beyond what is available on the site.
