paid registration and user profiles?

hello,
i am creating a site that requires u to pay to sign-up. I was wondering how i would be able to do this, possibly by adding an ecommerce module?
Also, I would like to extend the default user profiles to add a few more fields as well as having them tab-able, much like the user profile that are used on www.drupal.org (here :-)).
I asked about extending the user profiles on the IRC and i was told to edit the profile module. Where can I find this module if it comes to where I have to edit the user profiles manually?

I used the LM paypal module
I used the LM paypal module for membership payment before.

I'm not sure if any are available for d6 yet-- there's a couple of ways to search for them:
drupal.org uses the core profile module-- enable it and customize your site profiles at admin/user/profile
same as previous answer (admin/user/profiles)

...my apologies, but...
Sorry everyone, but I want to start a new forum thread in the General section. The software won't let me, which doesn't bode too well for building stuff in Drupal.
I go to 'General', then 'General discussion', then I click on 'Post new forum topic' and I get several drop-down menus which say 'please choose', but allow no choice, and then I am unable to proceed because I didn't choose from the drop-down menus which present no choices.
What's going on?
Apologies,
Mark
