as suggested by toemaz here, we will add the option for the current user to be the author of the newly-created forum topic when they click the Discuss This link for the first time, rather than a predefined user.

in fact, this turns out to be the default behaviour, if the permissions are incorrect (see this issue for more details). i've just overhauled the permissions mechanism, and in the process re-worked the admin/settings page so that leaving the Default Author blank enables this feature explicitly.
