Please bear with me after playing with the style sheets and templates for a while with some success, seeing how they work together. I am now starting from scratch with the Zen theme. It may be as plain as the nose on my face but when it gets to editing the starterkit template and php files the instructions say find and replace all instances of starterkit with the name of my file .... is there a way to do this besides going to each one individual such as a fine and replace menu option. or do i just need to fine each instance and replace it.

What are you using to edit these files?
Does it have a menu?
Is there a option?

Which one of these editors
Which one of these editors has the shortest learning curve?
I like the EditPlus editor
http://www.editplus.com/
One great feature is I can open an entire directory of files - 50 or so - and search for a particular string in all open files - so powerful for dealing with sites with a lot of template files like Mambo (yes, but not my install ... )

is there a good free one out

EditPlus is nagware
EditPlus is nagware
It will pop up a reminder once when you start it that your "evaluation period" is over.
Close it and it is still full-featured.
I am on day 102 of the 30 day evaluation period.
I like it so much I plan to send them $$
I also use SmartFTP and right-click on files in it to open in EditPlus..
(for really big/fast ftp I use Filezilla - but SmartFTP is cool because you can open multiple local and remote panes ie work on different sites on different servers at the same time - but don't get mixed up!)

notepad++ is free with out the nags and lets you search entire directories of files as well.

If you ask nicely I'll give you a towel : )
tried notepad++ went back to editplus
tried it, went back
don't remember why - could just be didn't see advantage and comfortable with what I know
only one nag on startup, no countdown or anything in editplus
have you tried editplus, VeryMisunderstood?
nice colors for html php javascript etc (cuts down on validating corrections, and uploading without that damn quote closed...)
can use in XHTML mode also HTML 4 - as well as Java C++ perl etc. - configurable templates
customizeable snippets
integrated browser view (I think IE is default but maybe could switch to other browser default)
(I am thankful you're not advocating Dreamweaver !)
guess it all comes down to comfort level and what you're used to (like publishers who prefer Joomla to Drupal)
