Does Drupal support directory or portal website?

Hi there we are just about to create an online directory/portal website and wanted to know if Drupal can do this for us? We have been considering developing one from scratch but dont feel that it is within our budget as it will be a free directory so hoped that drupal had modules that can be added to the cms.

The default drupal available for download along with OG is "portal" to me :)

Download and play with them on your localhost. You might find one of these close to your needs :)

I probably shouldnt have used the word "portal" it was suggested to me so I used it.
The main feature that we are looking for is a "directory" that businesses can subscribe to for free.
This is one very basic example. http://au.dir.yahoo.com/
We would be looking for more than that but it's a start. I am sure that we can add dripal modules to the website later.
Also do you know if we are allowed to remove the Drupal logo if we make a payment? or should we consider keeping the name at the bottom of each page?

Short answer is you can delete the drupal logo with no payment required - that's the beauty of open source. Showing the drupal logo is encouraged as it helps build awareness and support ofr the community, but you are under no obligations to use it.
