I am looking for provider of Virtual Private Servers. Any recommendations?

Does anyone have experience with Spry Hosting http://www.spry.com? If affirmative, what's your assessment of Spry?

Thanks in advance.

I used Rimu Hosting for awhile and was pretty pleased. They've just recently modified their plans so I can't comment on their current setup... they were always very fast to respond and help out too.

Current OS supported are:

  • RimuHosting Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4-based)
  • Debian 3.1 Sarge (or the older Woody if you specify that)
  • White Box Enterprise Linux (based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3)
  • Fedora Core 3
  • Red Hat 9

I didn't have enough "free time" to maintain my own server and left for a plain old shared plan. Someday when I've got all that free time I'm looking for I'll probably move back...

I've been looking for a VPS also. I found spry.com but the one that has my eye is westhost.com. All of their plans have VPS and start at $6.95 a month and go up.

I'd really like some feedback on these too!

I've tried Rimu and Linode and they are both very good.
Currently I'm thinking about switching to https://www.unixshell.com/ because they are cheaper

And whatever happens NEVER go to rosehosting.com, You can't control various kernel parameters or the swap. You can't turn the swap off, They simply took one of my friends' site down because of the load, They didn't inform him before and they were treating him like a dog.

I just canceled my account at Spry -- too many system problems and spotty tech support. Check out GoDaddy.com or Rackspace.com

We've been working with Firebright, and they also helped do the network spec for the future version of Drupal.org.

FWIW I started browsing their site several minutes ago, and it was working fine. Then when I was clicking on the link to their VPS products the site kept timing out ...

We have used Spry for several years. Both as a VPS and collocation provider. We have nothing but great things to say about them. I'd reccomend them to anyone.

Lost my backups due to disaster. Emailed support for help ...

:

Hello,

I want to apologize again, but because of the upgrades necessary to improve the functionality and reliability of our backup servers, none of our old backups are retrievable.

anyone tried westhost? i'm looking for a vps on thread 52711. summary there.

msameer’s picture

I'm using xelhosting.com now, I can say that they are very good.

I've been using both xelhosting and unixshell with similar configurations.

I ran cron jobs which would do a wget against various pages on both hosts. Xelhosting consistently had better performance.

Xelhosting seems a bit more professional too. But unixshell has a very nice entry price.

another post (new) on a thread said westhost is just great. i'll try them. someone said today that bluehost does daily backups, which westhost does not.

ae2005,

How is your westhost account working for you? I just saw where thay have added 'Ruby-on-Rails'. I hope their service has been commendable for you.

I'm looking for a VPS too. I sometimes find their websites don't tell me enough so I mail some questions... many don't even answer. Xelhosting was sold out, just like Unixshell.
I saw Westhost mentioned in this thread but they don't even tell you how much RAM each plan has, what servers they're on or what kind of virtualization they use. You get a giant list of all the things they do include but it's a bit guessing what you get it on.
So if anyone knows a host, I'm looking for:
Xen virtualization, DirectAdmin, decent specs (memory min. 256MB/diskspace/bandwidth), decent price (I don't want to be tempted to look for managed dedicated hosting, it's got to be competitive). I know a few names already which I'm checking out but additional input is appreciated and I don't think I'm the only one who'll benefit from it.

Ceasar,

I read your post and was curious myself, So I used WestHost online Chat Support and asked some questions. Below is a cut and past of that conversation with a Technical Support Guy who calls himself 'Eric'.

Please wait for a WestHost Representative to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Eric'

Eric: Most of our standard hosting packages don't come with dedicated resources.
However, we are fairly lenient with the resources that you use. We only cap RAM usage at 300 MB.

Eric: We also use Dell Pentium 4 servers.

Eric: Our virtualization software was developed by Sphera.

tim: thanks eric

tim: the RAM limit is for disk space?

Eric: The memory limit limits how much RAM a script can consume while it executes.

Eric: That's the limit that PHP places on memory consumption.
Our system administrators also monitor the servers to ensure that no one is using
too much RAM. This is the limit that I'm talking about.

tim: So it is a monitored limit so the server memory is not 'hogged' by one or two users,
thus depriving 'other' virtual users from the overall available server memory?

Eric: Yes, but there is no exact science to determine how much is too much.
We monitor the server, and if it is running low on resources, we see who is consuming
the most and stop whatever is causing the excessive memory usage.

tim: can a client, upon request, who has a high memory usage, be placed on a server
with other 'virtual servers' that may be using very little resources? Without buying their own server?

Eric: You can upgrade your package to our semi-dedicated plan. That plan provides
dedicated resources and only 19 other accounts will share the server with you

Eric: Did you have any other questions for me?

tim: no

tim: Thanks for Help Eric

Eric: You're welcome.

Eric: Thank you for contacting us today. If you need additional assistance,
please let us know. We appreciate you

choosing WestHost!

OK, That's It. No I do not work for WestHost but thay have been very good at helping me out. Their support is great. If you do decide to use them, let me know.

Regards,
t4him

Thank you for this response t4him,

I suppose when one uses 300 MB then one needs to look at what exactly he's doing and indeed maybe seeing whether an upgrade isn't appropriate. I still think it isn't smart of WestHost to not put these things on their site, especially considering the load of info they do give. Perhaps they've found mentioning Sphera costs them customers?
My personal quest progressed well: I'm down to 2 hosts. I either go for a fully managed package with a2b2 (UK) or unmanaged with ServerAxis (US). The latter has more bang for my bucks but I may be too n00b for 'fully unmanaged'. My own observations and the reviews I've read about a2b2 make me quite confident that these guys will help you out when you get stuck, although it comes at a price.
If only I could afford it I'd have signed up with the both! ;-)
