Spaces in user names

I have some users who use their real names ("John Smith" instead of, say, jsmith) as their user names. But when you try a user: search on such names you only get a "sorry, nothing matched" error. I've tried wrapping the name in single quotes, tying the names together with a plus sign, etc, with the same results.
