The maintainer of the Nodeaccess module, debtman7, has not made a single post in nearly a year, and it has been a year and 3 weeks since his last commit in the CVS. It appears to me that the project has been abandoned. I have made my own version of the current Drupal 5 version and ported it to Drupal 6, and I would like to share these - and to continue to share by maintaining the project in the future as well.

I work as webmaster of www.hiit.fi, where I am using my D5 version of Nodeaccess. I am not using the D6 version, nor do I have plans of using it - I ported it purely out of desire to contribute, and for love of coding. I expect to make use of it sometime in the future though.

I also sent an application for a CVS account with a link to this post, and the post above.

It's normal to allow 2weeks without response. You should also post to that issue that you have made a direct takeover request on this issue.

It has now been two weeks, and I have received no response from debtman7. I did make a post in the issue mentioned above, and I tried contacting debtman7 directly through the contact form. Oddly enough, he did post a couple times a few hours after the mail went out, but he never made any mention of my offer of taking over the module or to cooperate in its maintenance. I find this confusing: it seems as though I am being ignored, yet it doesn't appear debtman7 would be returning to actively maintain the module either.

In the meantime, it seems some other users have already found my version, and I have been asked if I would maintain it regardless of how this turns out - my answer was yes, I would, and the answer has not changed. I am currently working on another upgrade which will fix bugs and introduce some new features.

So - what will happen next?

Today I received a reply to the mail I sent through the contact form. The reply reads:

"Have you applied for a cvs account? I have some things I still would like to do with this
module but I'm in the process of prepping a move across the country and my free time is
pretty limited now. If you can get a cvs account set up, send me a note and I'll add you
to the project so you can merge in your changes. Most of the things I want to do are some
usability issues, UI improvements and also extending the permissions to file downloads,
but it's likely going to be a few months before I have the time to really get into that."

I have of course no proof of the authenticity of this mail, and there is still no post in drupal.org about this. But it is the only reply I've got.

So, it sounds like you've got your answer. It's unlikely that anyone will be spoofing that sort of response, so I would take it at face value and assume it is legitimate.

Get a CVS account, if you don't have one, and use this issue as your reason for obtaining one. Reply to the message stating what is happening on your end. Be sure to give your CVS account id (not the password) so the project owner can add you, then proceed.

It sounds like you have the green light to do what you have planned, but you'll be a co-maintainer, so be respectful of the project owner's wishes and collaborate on future changes.
