It seems that integrating another dynamicdrive script, swiss army slideshow, is the best answer.

Yes, you are correct. If you need these features then a different script would be the best choice. My wrapper module only works with the Fading Slideshow dynamicdrive script but it should be easy for someone to use my module as an example of how to wrap the swiss army slideshow or many of the other scripts found on the dynamicdrive site.
