Ubercart and E-commerce - your recommendations please

I am currently working with E-commerce on my site. I use it mainly to collect donations and make the donaters registered users (which doesnt work) and I would like later to sell access to book-texts. But I am not enthusiastic thus far. Can anyone tell me how Ubercart and E-commerce compare? What are your experiences?

I don't have enough use experience with e-Commerce to give you a useful comparison, but I can say that I did a quick implementation of the contributed donation module at http://supportministry.com/donate. It's not ideal, and I did have to do a little bugfixing on the module for it to work, but I'm pretty sure the changes have been rolled in. Essentially, it treats donations like product lines on orders, and Ubercart's checkout system includes automatic registration if necessary.

Selling access to book texts should be easily accomplished using the file downloads module for downloads or some sort of node access system (I just released one option - UC Node Access) for book texts online. If you need an opinion on the file downloads system, there's a lot of discussion/use talk on Ubercart.org. torgosPizza there from RiffTrax is one of the file downloads gurus there.

Hope that helps! At the very least, this is just saying the functionality you mention is available in Ubercart. I'll leave it to others to post their opinions on how well it all works together.

I cannot speak to the donations functionality (although an easy fix for this might be to use the tac_lite module to restrict access to a special donations page to registered users only; have you thought about using paypal for donations?).

As for recommendations, there is no comparison, because UC is really in a class by itself. The script is a work of art, the interface is innately intuitive, and the community support is about as good as you can get.
