First I had installation of an earlier version of Ec3 then upgraded to Ec4 . Finally I changed my mind and decided to work on Ec3.
But reinstallation did not go smooth. The ecommerce tables do not get installed even after they are enabled and saved in the admin section. To circumvent this problem I had to flash out the system table. Then some of the tables start to be installed and then the above error displayed.

deleting rows from system and variable tables associated with ecommerce module and reinstalling fixed the issue.
