Description

hey, I didn't know how to name this request. In web directories there are two kinds of measure. One is the number of times a user clicks a link (we could call it out) and another measure is the number of users that have arrived from an external domain link (we could call it in). Most directores list their external links on the basis of ther ins and then their outs. It means, they give more importance to the traffic other sites are bringing than the traffic they are giving as a gift. Does this module support this or is it at least possible to implement? Did I explain me adequately? I hope it is clear.

This module currently measures outgoing only. There are other modules that measure a node's incoming traffic: Statistics (part of core) and Node Radioactivity come to mind. If you have a preference for one of those other modules, I can provide support for a unified metric.

Thanks,

From my point of view, Statistics functionality is the one to go for. In fact, Statistics already gives you a list of main referrers. The bad thing about Statistics is that it doesn't aggregate all URLs of the same domain. If this module could get the statistics info and aggregate all ins from the same domain, it would be usable for the usual functionality of link lists, listing external links by the number of ins. As we all know, people tend to press more the links at the top rather than at the bottom. If we sort by the number of ins, we are sending them traffic in reply to the traffic they are sending to us.

I believe that I misunderstood what you are asking for. I thought that you wanted to measure the number of users who followed the link as a ratio of users who viewed the link. This would tend to normalize the ranking of nodes in a link directory, i.e. give lower ranking nodes a better chance to climb the ranks, since users naturally click higher ranking links regardless of their quality.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I now think that what you really want is a way to foster reciprocal links.

yes, I was talking about reciprocal links between sites.

I don't like the idea of ranking links based on something other than their appeal to a link directory's users. I believe that by focusing on the user's interests, page rank will take care of itself.
