Hello-
I'm a graphic designer, and I've been moving into using Drupal to power my websites for the past maybe 6 months or so. So far, I have had terrible luck with hosting.
At the moment, I'm in a huge pinch. I have a client who wanted to stay with her old hosting company, and after being told by tech support over and over that Drupal would work, and I must be doing something wrong, I was finally informed that they don't allow cron. So I've got this project that's been dragging on forever, and I really have to come up with a good suggestion for the client.
The problem is though, that the hosting forum seems to be a totally baised advertising free-for-all! I have no idea how I'm supposed to narrow it down to a host that won't have constant downtime, or cut you off if you use too much memory, etc, etc, etc.
The client is looking to host on the cheap - around $10/month. Her old plan was only $7 so I'm hoping to find something comparable, and I understand that for $7/mo, you can't have it all, but I'm really stuck here. Has there been any official reports that rank hosting for Drupal compatability and overall goodness, or anything like that?
Thanks so much!

I can't help you with unbiased opinions because I think my host is great. ;) But, if your only problem is cron, why not have a look at the poormanscron module?

Cron isn't really the only problem, it's kind of a terrible host overall. I've been sitting on hold for the past hour or so because my sql admin panel is "missing", so I have to do a fresh install, which won't work either. Thanks for the suggestion, it probably will work if anyone picks up the phone, but I've been dealing with these guys all week and nobody has actually fixed the problems I'm getting. It's my own fault though for using a host I was unfamiliar with!

I've used godaddy, yahoo, drupalvaluehosting (personally haven't had any probelms with them), rackspace and mosso. If I remember correctly yahoo wouldn't allow me to upload an .htaccess file so if you need to use that I wouldn't recommend yahoo. dvh is about $10 a month, with tons of space. Rackspace and mosso are also good options, however a little more expensive I believe. I haven't used godaddy in years so I"m not current on what their prices and such are like atm.

I have set up my client's website (Drupal 5) on Bihira.com hosting.
It's a cheap and affordable hosting that supports Drupal. Has Cpanel and most of the features.
You might wanna have a look at it.
Their cheapest plan is only $2.5/month and you get:

I used them back when I had a shared server and they were great. Very good price, great support, server was fast for a shared. Just don't get their dedicated or VPS hosting ;)
TotalChoiceHosting
$4 a month will get you started -- you can do a manual install of Drupal or use the Fantastico Deluxe auto installer for cPanel. I have used this host for over a year now for a project that I am doing on a very limited shoestring.
