I'm having a number of problems with the core search module--the results include unwanted info, such as taxonomy tags etc, and I find the results to be somewhat poor in general. I know about Google Custom Search Engine (and the module for it), but that seems only to work if Google has already indexed your entire site (in my case, not yet).

So, I'm looking for a viable search alternative in the meantime. Any suggestions welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

there are multiple contrib modules in the downloads area that may help.

i never got a reply to that post. any clue why what i'm describing is happening? i'm completely baffled by this problem. thanks!
