I've been trying to implement the second solution presented at http://drupal.org/node/155400 so that I could selectively override styles. But for some reason it's not working. None of the core or module styles are ever loaded.

I'm pasting the function at the top of the page.tpl.php and I'm pasting the 'where it's called' code in place of print $styles;

Am I missing something obvious?

I think both pieces of code go in template.php and not page.tpl.php
