Don't the default node permissions do this job? I mean, if a user doesn't have permission to view a node, then they can't see the RSS icon, and so can't access the feed?

I'd really apprectiate it if you could you explain further why this module is needed?

If you use a RSS feed reader like Google Reader, you cannot access the RSS feed, since Google Reader cannot log in for you. This would theoretically allow you to subscribe from Google Reader; once you get the token from your profile, you can subscribe to the feed with that token, and be able to view the posts from there.
