Reposting from http://drupal.org/node/135503 because I've found the same problem in 5.x-2.1.1

The workaround: blank "from name" and emails get sent.

Related issue: #279836: "Name" <email@example.com> FROM name fails
Except I'm NOT using IIS mail and am using the SMTP module... So this really needs to be fixed in code.

Looks like you found the issue on your own. Webform is not compatible (afaik) with SMTP module. I'm marking this as duplicate and we can concentrate on the issue you referenced.
