When a display (such as page) is selected, the live preview Display filter should default to the selected type (page, for instance) instead of "defaults"

I have thought of that, though I'm not entirely convinced it's an improvement, especially when you're dealing with attachment displays. Where you might actually be modifying one display but looking at another.

could this be made configurable.

i had this issue personal a lot of times. and there are definitve quite some users who would like this feature.
just my oppinion.
