It took me a while t figure out that the predefined number is hard coded.

Same here. readme or install.txt definitely needed when the description says that something can be predefined, but than not have any settings page. Very confusing.

A user (I can't remember off the top of my head who) has sent me a port of this module to D6, including in the port is a settings page (which I lazily left out). Once I get round to back-porting this, I'll release the D6 version and a new D5 version with the settings page.
