Yes, I agree we should instead have this functionality in core. I always had the impression "it's an obvious feature, so 'they' are probably working on it already", so I never bothered to write a proper patch. I'll open a Drupal issue after I investigate where things stand. But... you too could open an issue (don't mention me or this module: core's implementation would be quite different than this one's).
