Hi,

My current developer cannot finish my website and the development of the site is hosted on their own server.

Should I look to host the site myself and share the access details so that another developer can finish the site?

Any advice would be welcome,

Tom

You should certainly make your first priority gaining control of the site. Hopefully your relationship with the developer is good and you can obtain the files and the database--that anyhow would be the first step--then you have the work in your own hands.

My personal advice would be yes, to host the site yourself and find someone else to help you. If you can't install Drupal yourself, you can also ask the new developer to do that.

Good luck!

Hi,

Whenever you are migrating, you should be aware about modifications made to modules. Though it is not good practice to change code of already tried and tested modules of great drupal, sometimes we have to. So you should ask him if he has made such changes. If yes, which and for what purpose. That has to be communicated to new developer.

Also on what theme is your new theme based. You can figure it out all modules which are used by yourself and then try to figure out from where everything is coming or ask new developer to have a look. That should be pretty simple for any developer. Ask him to ask questions in advance instead of asking later when old developer is away or busy with work.

There are no doubts that you should host it on your own server.

Thanks,
Nehal Mehta.

Do not leave any of the files with the current developer - but be sure to move the site first. We've had clients whose original sites were destroyed by the original developer. Also be sure you have control over your domain name. And finally, change login/passwords to control your domain, the admin of the Drupal install (if you're using Drupal), the database user/pass, and the hosting/FTP passwords.

Good luck with your new developer, and let us know if we can be of service.

Other devs may hate me for saying this, but always make sure you control where your site is hosted. Your dev may have their own staging server (like I do) but you should always control the account where the live site is hosted.
