what are they and where are they explained?

I've searched, but I get a lot of results where people are discussing breadcrumbs.. but it is assumed that you already know about them.

I believe breadcrumbs are established through the navigation menu. You can add to the default system navigation menu and establish the site hierarchy or "site map" so to speak. The breadcrumb trail will reflect the menu structure. Otherwise, you can establish the breadcrumb trail by using the custom modules explained on this page http://drupal.org/node/533448
