I've just checked the source and the tags are present but not working. please help!

Did you check the source in the editor itself or in the published page? By default, Drupal filters much of the HTML out when publishing the page - you need to select the correct input format to prevent this.
The most obvious thing to try is:
- edit the page you are creating
- find the "input format" section
- select "full HTML" as the input format
- save the page
You can also change the default input format in admin/settings/filters
