I'm using the 23 May 08 version of 5.x-1.x-dev. The 'show users with no avatars' setting is unchecked, but gaps are still created for users who don't have a profile picture.

I confirm the problem. I managed to have Avatar Gallery working properly, but after playing around with configuration I ended up with 'show users with no avatars' unchecked and error "the missing image file has not been specified" being reported. I then specified a fall-back image, but now all my users are getting the same "missing" image.
