Restricted Access file manager module?

Heya, I'm an experienced web dev with virtually no drupal experience (I've got it running on my server and have messed around with it for a little while).

I'm trying to find a content management solution for a client, but part of the requirements is the ability to upload pdf's that are restricted to users based on their user-role, and these documents also need to be categorized in two seperate manners (Category and Type, for example).

Anyway, I browsed through the modules and didn't see anything that specifically does this, and was just wondering if maybe I missed something that is similar (requiring some mods is fine) that you could point me to.
