Using 6.3 with Garland theme
-------------------------------------
Ok, first have to say that this type of thing has happened before. Another common problem I have is that at some point the underlying theme dissapears and more often tahn not the only soluation i found is a complete reinstall.
Fortunately I am still testing stuff.
In this case I was doing some things with the Aggregator module. I set up a feed and then truied to place the feed so that it would appear on the left hand column, underneath the default navigation menu.
All of the sudden the whole left column was gone. I have gone into administer blocks to desactivate/activate the navigation module but it just doesn't show up anymore. I have activated some different blocks on the left column and they do appear.
The question now is: is there any way to restore Drupal somehowwithout having to do a complete reinstall (my fourth one this week it would be !). I have already run cron and update.php but still having the same problem.
Appreciate any help. Thanks.

have you tried clearing your cache in adminsiter -> performance ?

Thanks for this, it seems to have done "something".
I really thought that having enabled the cache options previously I wouldn't require to go and manually (pressing the appropriate button) clear the cache...

cache and aggregation of css / js should be disabled until the site is live. If adjustments need to be made these should again be disabled and reenabled after the changes are made.

Ok, got it, it looks as if i don't understand the cache mechanism enough for now. Will follow your good advice, thanks. Site is starting to work more normally now, still with a couple of glitches but think I won't have to reinstall.
Blocks still not working
I have similar issue with blocks disappearing after adding translate to sidebar area.
running Drupal 6.10 on localhost
- cache wasn't activated, cleared cache just in case (@ admin/settings/performance.)
I find settings options for RSS feed (@ admin/content/rss-publishing) but not sure which module to switch off??
also tried - uninstall all block positions & run update.php + cron
Then re-install block positions (sidebar)
All blocks are still missing...login/navigation etc.....please advise??
user warning: Can't create/write to file 'C: emp\#sql_c54_0.MYI' (Errcode: 22) query: SELECT DISTINCT b.* FROM blocks b LEFT JOIN blocks_roles r ON b.module = r.module AND b.delta = r.delta WHERE b.theme = 'garland' AND b.status = 1 AND (r.rid IN (2,3) OR r.rid IS NULL) ORDER BY b.region, b.weight, b.module in C:\wamp\www\test site\modules\block\block.module on line 407.

Same issue as the OP, only this didn't help me out.
Have tried various typical solutions too (cron, check updates, database truncating, etc.)
Any other suggestions?
