Limit the number of login attempts

modul - July 22, 2008 - 22:37

Is it possible to limit the number of attempts a visitor is allowed to login? It would be nice, for instance, to be able to say something like "Only 3 login attempts per IP number per hour. If you have not succeeded after 3 attempts, you'll have to wait an hour before you can try again", something like that. I realize it's not a really hard way to secure your site for login bots, but at least it might scare off some nitwits. Is there anything like that for Drupal 5.7?

Limiting the number of login

Limiting the number of login attempts per time period, that's what I'm looking for. Is there anyone who could point me in the right direction? Say, for instance, I would like to make it impossible to try more than 3 login attempts per hour. That would make it more difficult for brute force login bots or unwanted would-be users to do their nasty job. If no successful login was made, they'd have to wait an hour before being able to try again. Is this possible? I think it would be a very welcome "weapon" in a site admin's security toolbox. Any hints?

Hmm... Apparently, I'm the only one who thinks this is a sensible question :-) . Still, if anyone would happen to know how to limit the number of login attempts per time period, max. 3 times per hour, I would be ever so grateful! I think this is a sensible way to keep certain bots or malevolent users away. Any hints?

When in doubt, Search

A simple search (Search Downloads in the right sidebar) for "login attempts" found Login Security as the top hit, which has the feature you need.

from 7/22 to 9/6-- i am constantly amazed at how long people will sit around waiting for an answer to a question they could answer themselves in 20 seconds.

sorry modul-- i didn't mean to pick on you specifically but it's a valid question. I know d.o. can at times be difficult and unintuitive to search but with something like this the search terms are obvious and the correct result was both obvious and the very FIRST link-- i simply don't get it.

I'm not being facetious-- i really and truly don't get it. 2 terms entered into the "Search downloads" box would have answered your question immediately. how is that in any way less desirable then waiting 30+ days and bumping your own post 5 times?

Sometimes searching is

Sometimes searching is counter-intuitive, and believe me, I did and do search. In this particular case, I probably used the wrong terms "attempting to login", "secure login", "securing login", whatever, but obviously not "login attempts". OK, bad luck. That's what happens sometimes with free search. Anyway, I think my problem is solved, no hard feelings, and keep up the good work.

good-- no hard feelings on my end either. And thanks for posting back-- this is very valuable feedback. I know they're working on improving search, but if we can understand where people go wrong in doing their searches then maybe we can improve it even more. I keep sort of a log of these kinds of things hoping that maybe when i discover a pattern, i can figure out how to submit some improvements.

thanks again...
