www.drupalroom.com is launched

Veerostudio - July 22, 2008 - 23:25

We are proud to announce the launching of www.drupalroom.com.

This portal will strive to become a meeting point for all drupal fans. It will be updated daily with the latest news, themes, drupal powered sites and many more. Basically here you will find everything related to drupal.

Everybody is welcome to be a contributor of the site by submitting different articles, themes, or sites you have developed and designed using drupal.

Disappointed

_carey - July 22, 2008 - 23:38

I would have thought it would be a Drupal site.

=-=

VeryMisunderstood - July 22, 2008 - 23:42

I agree I think it bogus to use joomla to build a site about drupal.

It reminds me of a "star" promoting a product like pepsi, but then being photographed drinking coke.

Thanks

Keyz - July 23, 2008 - 01:15

While definitely odd to make a site for/about Drupal using Joomla to power the site, it does look like a well made site. Thanks for contributing to Drupal!

Trademark issue

Amazon - July 23, 2008 - 02:12

Drupal is a registered trademark of Dries Buytaert. I suggest that you get permission to use that trademark before you use it earn revenue on your Joomla template ads.

You site is really slow, you might want to try a fast social publishing system like, oh, I don't know, Drupal!

Veerostudio - July 23, 2008 - 02:44

hopefully the site will migrate very soon to Drupal, just have to figure out more first, but loved the idea, so couldn't wait to put the project in life.

I dont know what joomla template ads you are talking about, maybe its some google ads that showed up in your comp.

thanks for your comments though...

Yes, the ads appear to be

Keyz - July 23, 2008 - 03:48

Yes, the ads appear to be from Google AdSense, and the site owner (AdSense publisher) has little/no control over what ads it shows (he can only identify those he doesn't want after they show up and manually enter the URLs he doesn't want). I'm guessing Google is reading the Joomla meta tag or some other bit about Joomla and putting ads about the several relevant pieces of data it has to go on (since there's not much text on the pages), such as the word/section "themes" which is a big commercial area with Joomla, so there's likely a lot of available ads for that (compared to very few for Drupal in this area), and the fact that it is an opensource CMS. In fact the Google AdWords advertiser could have even chosen to show their ads on the site manually, since it is for an opensource CMS which is a relevant audience even if it's not the same CMS. In any case, any non-developer visitor to the site is going to assume it's Drupal powered anyhow.

Anyhow, I suggest a ceasefire on the hostilities and presumptions of guilt before knowing the facts. It's a nice site and I appreciate its content no matter which CMS it currently runs on. And regarding the Drupal trademark, I'm sure Dries would have nothing against this use of it (why would he?). I could be wrong, but I doubt he'd even raise an issue for a pro-Joomla site called joomla-versus-drupal.com or something, so long as it was an honest comparison. Joomla is our friendly opensource neighbor, and we each learn from each other in different ways.

Veerostudio, if you need any advice on migrating to Drupal feel free to ask and I'll be happy to help.

Don't be sure

Michelle - July 23, 2008 - 03:54

Don't be too sure Dries would approve. The trademark needs to be actively protected or it can be lost. The DA, of which Amazon is a member, takes the trademark seriously. I'm not on the DA and won't speculate as to whether this usage would be approved, but don't be too quick to dismiss Amazon's comment. Trademark violations are a serious matter.

Clarification

Keyz - July 23, 2008 - 04:27

I didn't mean to say Dries would approve of "just anything", nor was I dismissing Amazon's comment, but rather that a legitimate/honest use of the word in unofficial domain names is not unheard of (e.g. it's a pro-drupal site, not promoting anything wrong or illicit, slandering, or any other thing that would clearly be a use of the name with ill-intent).

Not all have the word drupal in their actual domain (couldn't figure out how to filter by that alone, only by URL path), but not counting drupal.org, Google returns 1,860,000 sites that have Drupal in their URL.
Search for: allinurl: drupal -drupal.org
Not sure if this is everything, but this search lists 122 drupal domains: http://whois.net/search.cgi2?str=drupal

I'm sure no where near 1.8 million "domains" contain the word drupal, but just at quick glace there were at least 10s of unofficial drupal sites with the word in the domain within 2 or so pages of results. As many have existed before the DA, I'm sure very few have received official permission to use the word.

Yes. Usage of the word drupal in domains with clear ill-intent or abuse should be stopped. But I would not be proud of Drupal to start becoming litigious against well-meaning Drupal fan sites for using the word in their domains (in fact I would find this devastating). I didn't look into the DA's position on this before posting, but figured my response was accurate in the spirit of the Drupal community and open source, and since having looked more carefully at the site in question here (and given my experience with AdSense and both CMS platforms), believe this site to fall into the category of well-meaning Drupal fans sites.

I felt that my defense of Veerostudio's site was needed in this instance, since people were clearly jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts (and by this I don't mean any offense to anyone, just trying to help - I hope you understand). It is a great-looking site, and will be a nice addition to the suite of Drupal fan sites. We need to welcome such great contributions with open arms, and welcome their creators into the community as well :)

Need reliable Drupal hosting?

Thanks David for your

Veerostudio - July 23, 2008 - 04:13

Thanks David for your comments.
I already have blocked some of the ads, but they will take a while to be updated.

Sincerely, I never expected this type of comments. There are many blogs and sites out there, for Drupal, Joomla or whatever open source, many of them use wordpress or something else. Many Drupal sites or Joomla sites integrate flash and other types of software as well.

I think the important thing is the aim, the content. I have tried to create a portal for Drupal, thinking there is an opening, while for other open sources (Joomla etc.) there are hundreds of sites and portals.

So I think, this is a contribution to Drupal, no matter which CMS has been used for the site. Actually, I would appriciate more comments regarding the content of the site, what is missing, what should be added etc.

Thanks again,
IDI

VeryMisunderstood - July 23, 2008 - 11:39

While content may be king. If I'm a casual obsever, any information on your site would have less meaning because the site isn't built in drupal. I'd feel as if the developer was just "hopping on the drupal train without a real ticket". While I applaud the effort, I just think it distasteful.

Basic Drupal HOw to

drupaldesign.net

andyshack - September 1, 2008 - 19:26

Hi Folks,

I'm one from the list of the newly reg'd domains www.drupaldesign.net

I have been playing with drupal for the past 2 years now and plan to use it as somewhat of a blog / beta / documentation area for contributions to the drupal project.

I have been writing and making notes over the past year (especially on CVS) and thought it would be a good idea to get some of that content up and out there!

I had horrible troubles coming to terms with the idea of CVS installations of drupal from the documentations and guides that I found and hope to have it all up for you newcomers over the next few weeks.

CVS saves my drupal bacon :)
