On the image nodes generated by Image module, the preview image doesn't link to the original lightbox image. How can I make this work? The readme is confusing.

It's not designed to work on the image links on the image node. Those links don't have a class name assigned (other than "active" which is too general and can be assigned to non-image links) so it's not currently possible to add this feature either.
