Now that jQuery ships within the Drupal core framework (as of D5), this page outlines and cross-references the most current versions of jQuery that are compatible with Drupal core versions.
Drupal 7
jQuery 1.4.2 and jQuery UI 1.8

jQuery 1.2.6
Drupal Core 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2

Drupal Core 5.0 through 5.8
jQuery 1.0.x (currently 1.0.4)
If you'd like to try using a higher version of jQuery in your Drupal site, there's always jQuery_update.module, which can currently bring you right up to date (i.e. version 1.2.6) in either D5 or D6.
