If you want to encourage broad adoption, help people reviewing the code, submit patches etc, I strongly suggest you adhere to drupal coding standards, though : http://drupal.org/coding-standards.
It is also a (fairly important) psychological 'trust' criteria when assessing the quality of a module before actually installing it on a production site.

The coder module (http://drupal.org/project/coder) will be of great help with this task.
