These modules seem to be competing:

They should cooperate instead :)

They're not exactly competing since user_relationships.module appears to be a lot more advanced and is better maintained than buddylist.
They serve different use cases IMO, but if both authors like to get together and merge their efforts then of course it's better for the community.

Consider a glance at Buddylist2. A d6 port is in work and will be also supporting user relationships...

No. buddylist2 is definitely better supported than User Relationships. Which is a pity.
