Different Formats for Notifications of different Content Types

I've been trying to choose between Subscriptions and Notifications.

A key issue has been - how do I present different types of content?
Subscriptions SEEMS to win out over Notifications at the moment because it has different email templates for each content type.
I have commented on this aspect of within the mail group at groups.drupal.org http://groups.drupal.org/node/12645

But I may have maligned Notifications because I don't understand how templates work as I am not a programmer. I am used to working with the likes of Tinymce and Rich Text input format to get the format I want.

Is it in fact possible to take the single template that seems to exist within Notifications and embed a series of If statmements or a Case statement so that basically the different formats were all provided from within the single template?

If that is the case then I will need to go back and modify the comment referred to above accordingly. And find someone to do the necessary coding!
