Data no longer available

I've just updated two of my projects. I access the file data via the node_load command.
Now my references to the file data are empty arrays, and rolling back does not fix.

Existing information remains but added data is not available.
New file fields created render no data when data is there;

i.e. $node->field_datafield = array(0) { }
