Could the weighting be controlled using a drop down select box rather than a blank text field? I found that a couple of the users (non-tech savvy types) were a bit confused with the "freedom" they had to assign weights. They got a bit lost since the rest of the weighting system in Drupal is controlled with a select box.
I would imagine the -10 to 10 would be sufficient.

And just another quick note is being able to control pre-established weights via the table on the administer -> settings -> default filter settings page.
