How to view/create a simple website?

Hi all,
I've successfully installed drupal 6.x. Documentation has been great except I can't find anywhere how to setup/create a simple test website (e.g. print "hello this is my first drupal test site" on the main page"). I gone to the "Create Content" link and added some simple text and can see a preview but how do I see this not in the Drupal account manager?
Running on local LAMP box.
Thank you, newbie to Drupal.

Promote to Front Page
When you create content, you create a new page of the website that contains the information you entered and displays it in a certain format depending on the type of content (page, story, etc). If you really just want to see something that you wrote, just go to create content and click on "Create Page". Enter in a title and a body. Then on the bottom of the page where it says "Publishing Options", check the box that says "Promoted to front page". Click submit and you'll see the content you just created. Then go back to the homepage and it should be there as well.
To set a home page, go to
To set a home page, go to site config, site information, default front page, and tell drupal the node ID.
