Just an "out of interest" question. Rough estimate for launch...are we looking at Spring 2009 or later? Has a code freeze been decided on?

When it's ready :P
Not in code freeze yet.
Dries has said it will bne when the community is ready for it.
Code freeze according tio the current roadmap (which may have changed) all depends on how much test coverage there is. If 100%, then around November. If 0 then July (which has passed). last check there was around 70% coverage, so without other factors that would suggest October.
As for release, spring would be a good call. The Drupal Spring being anywhere between January and June, when the blockers have been squashed :P
So we may potentially be
So we may potentially be looking at 5 dropping off the radar as early as Feb/Mar 2009. That strikes me as being "soon" considering how long 6 has taken from launch to full readiness. Even now in late July, I'm still seeing threads suggesting that "you should stick with 5, 6 isn't ready yet as there are too many modules either not ready or only dev ready".
Yep.
It's important to keep in mind that those kinds of things are exactly what the Drupal community -- the developers actively working on Core in particular -- keep in mind. Work is proceeding on the next version of Drupal, but what that means for a release date, and for the support schedule of older versions, is not set in stone. The vast majority of the Drupal world -- the deployed sites that are out there -- are still using D5, and that inertia is what both powers and motivates ongoing support.

I'm glad to hear that. I've
I'm glad to hear that. I've been a member of the community here for 16 months or so, so these are not the squealings of a noob struggling on the learning curve. The take up of D6 has been significantly slower than that of D5 which had just been launched when I joined here.
As you say, I hope the policy for D7 launch/D5 continued support will be dictated by real world realities and not carved-in-stone dogma.
well that failed
its jan 2010 and still no 7. I would really like some conclusive info about when it will be released
=-=
There are still alpha's, Beta's and RC releases to get through before a stable release of D7
last I read the first alpha is trying to get out the door. However, at the time of this comment there are still 518 Pending bugs. 269 Critical issues, and 374 patches to be reviewed. These can be seen/watched/followed by enabling the contributor blocks in your d.o profile.
There is no roadmap or ETA for a stable release.
hehe
31 march 2010 ;)
whenever it will be lauched, I think drupal 7 should contain, seo modules, like global redirect, meta tags and so on.

There are some new features that pulled in some modules that matured in contrib though none of the ones listed as far as I can see in my testing of D7
