I apologize if this is a dumb question, but please understand I am incredibly new to Drupal. I've tried searching for an answer, but have been unable to find concrete instructions. I currently have a site that's running Drupal 5.7, and I'd like to upgrade to 5.9. I understand I'll need to upgrade to 5.8 first, then 5.9, but could someone please explain to me in the most simple language possible how to do that?

Thanks!

You can going 5.7 to 5.9 directly.

1. backup your files & database
2. overwrite new drupal files except for files folder
3. do update.php

Step (1) important if something unwanted happen, you can restore your previous site.

Is there a strong advantage to upgrading to 5.9 if I'm already on 5.7? My current installation seems to be running smoothly so unless there are major bugs, I'm not sure why I'd upgrade until I decide to go to 6x. What do you think?

to be as secure as possible. Not only bug fixes go into the next minor release but secuirty patches.

Being lazy about updating puts your site at risk.

there is an upgrade.txt file in the 5.9 download that you can follow as well.
