Is there any way to set the magnification of the map?

Yeah - I know about this one, but it's good to have it noted.

If someone can help out by finding out how many pixels per degree Gmap displays at various zoom levels the rest should be simple. For some reason that information seems hard to come by.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'type of map eg Terrain' - if this is some kind of feature request please open a new issue with better description.
