I have used panels 2 and views mainly to display the site's layout.

other modules I have used include:
announcements，cck，date，drupalit，nice_menus，taxonomy_list，thckbox，panels，advpoll，google_cse，
finduser，gallery，userpoints，invite，faq，guestbook，Account_reminder, adsense, views
adsense_injector,advanced_forum,audio,blog_addons,buddylist,captcha,contact_attach,drupalit,
taxonomy_breadcrumb, etc

I also use panels to be right block，which can be used for advertisement，but the default mini panel has a seperator between two blocks，you can remove it in this module file.
